Making Sense - Participate in the United Nations International Day of Disabled People

Date & Venue: Thursday3rd of December 2009, York House, Twickenham

Every year millions of people around the world commemorate this day in their own unique way and we invite you to participate in this celebration.

What is Happening

An exploration of our different senses, and how people use senses differently, is how the borough will be celebrating the International Day of Disabled People this year. There will be an indoor sensory garden, group music activities, inclusive sports and more – giving plenty of opportunities to learn about developing an inclusive society

An inclusive society is achieved when people with disability are involved in every aspect of political, social, economic and cultural life.

Working with many local groups, Richmond AID and other local disability charities are putting together a large event in early December with lots of different ‘sensory activities’ grouped together in York House, Twickenham. We would like to invite you to be part of our celebration – a number of local groups and schools will be able to demonstrate their own activity, or project, around this theme. You don’t have to contribute an activity – a group visit to York House on Thursday 3 December will give enough opportunity to join in!

What Can You Do?

  • Explore the sensory garden constructed inside the hall
  • Drop-in drumming & poetry workshops with the Fire Poet, Phillip Wells & tabla player Sirish Kumar.
  • Sporting activities – challenge yourself to a game of Boccia!
  • Painting with Music Workshops 3-5pm
  • Music Therapy ‘taster’ session with Richmond Music Trust 3-4pm
  • Art / animation displays by the Octagon Art Club
  • Help us create an enormous tactile ‘enAble’ logo on the day.

  • Find out how local schools teach issues around diversity at the PSHE Association (Personal, Social Health Education) stand. Also displays by Kew Prep and Strathmore schools.
